Payne Printery Expands Bindery Offerings, Increases Productivity
and Customer Base
KENNESAW, Ga. - Print media industry leader Heidelberg
recently installed a Stahl B30 buckle plate folder, a Stitchmaster
ST 270 saddlestitcher and its new POLAR ED 137 cutting system with
jogger and transomat stacker at Payne Printery Inc., based in
Dallas, Pa. Offering customers more options, the new bindery
equipment has expanded the shop's client base and increased
productivity significantly.
"The past three years have ushered in exponential growth at
Payne Printery," said Chief Operating Officer and Owner Brett
Gauntlett. "There is no doubt that the quality of Heidelberg
equipment, combined with our people, has caused this surge.
Heidelberg machines allow us to compete for big-ticket jobs, all
the while providing a superior product for our customers. Customers
expect quality, and if you can't provide it, you lose."
Printing a variety of projects such as direct mail pieces,
brochures, and annual reports, Gauntlett chose to upgrade his
shop's offerings in an effort to reach more markets and expand its
reach to larger, more national markets. The new postpress equipment
adds to an already-extensive Heidelberg portfolio, including a
six-color Speedmaster CD 74 with coater, a four-color Quickmaster
DI-46-4 with direct imaging and a six-color Speedmaster CD 102 with
coater. When combined with the recent installation of postpress
equipment, the shop has increased productivity by nearly 35 percent
in the past three years.
Heidelberg's B30 folder has many built-in features that
differentiate it from other folders, including the most advanced
sheet-flow technology that can fold at speeds exceeding 9,000
inches per minute and as such increases production capacity
significantly. All Stahlfolders are designed to help eliminate some
of the most strenuous work that takes place in every bindery
department. Some of the B30's ergonomically engineered features
include the Zero Makeready Buckle Plates, extended loading table
and a low feed-height of 36 inches making it easy to continuously
load and feed stock.
Heidelberg's Stitchmaster ST 270, an ergonomically designed
saddlestitcher, is manufactured to run a highly diverse range of
products and substrates. Speed can range as high as 11,500 cycles
per hour, and the ST 270 features a cascade system that guarantees
a complete book from start to stop, maximizing production and
minimizing waste. Heidelberg takes pride in designing and providing
equipment to customers that can be easily prepared and made ready
to insure that the postpress production deadline demands are
achieved.
"The B30 system and Stitchmaster ST 270 provide high output
and versatility, making them perfect for a mid-size shop that is
experiencing growth," said Steven Calov, Heidelberg product
manager, stitching and perfect binding. "With the new postpress
equipment, Payne Printery can continue expanding its capabilities,
allowing the shop to service existing customers more efficiently
and to bring in new customers, meeting its business goal of
increasing the bottom line."
Complementing the shop's new folding and stitching equipment
is Heidelberg's POLAR ED 137 cutter with automated jogger and
transomat stacking system. Setting new standards in the medium and
large-size formats, the POLAR ED model offers shorter production
times, high-precision positioning and easy operation.
"Heidelberg is the Rolls Royce of the printing industry,"
said Gauntlett. "There is nothing better than to be able to say,
'We're a Heidelberg shop.' That statement carries a lot of weight
for potential customers. Having Heidelberg's equipment undoubtedly
helps us sell our shop to larger cities and bring new clients in
the door."
Payne Printery is a mid-sized, family-owned, general
commercial printer that specializes in producing materials for the
financial, health care, and collegiate markets, including catalogs,
pocket folders, brochures and other direct mail pieces. An
all-Heidelberg shop for more than 70 years, Gauntlett is the fourth
generation owner of his family's business.
